The form originated (as did many Japanese forms) in the 16th century. Since John Ashbery published 6 haibun and 37 haiku in his 1984 collection A Wave the haibun has become broadly popular among contemporary American poets. Australian examples: four poems by John Tranter titled ‘The Seasons’ on this site. ‘The one rule, which seems to have come down over the years, is that the poem should not qualify the prose. As with the linking of verses in renga, the haiku should “leap” to a subject which might compliment the prose by juxtaposition.’ — Janice M.
