Mitcham Hall, just after VJ Day:
at every window,
blossom piled up high
made a pink light. I remembered all the names
and “Thank you for the present'
(wrapped up secret — I can't remember one)
and got sore feet.
Then Colin Gogler came
with a Mickey Mouse and a clock that taught the time —
unwrapped! And I was five
so they were mine
(two girls stuck out their tongues and I hit one).
The mothers made a party
of their own
in pinnles and headscarves, drinking Autumn Brown
in the kitchen
and talking about The Men
and Aunty Letty cried, then laughed again.
Outside, we shrieked
like starlings coming home.
