The Climate to Confess
by Richard James AllenFrom book: The Air Dolphin Brigade [ Previous | Next ]

i have asked you for nothing
because i know this is all i can expect
we two cohabit
this time and place
so infinitesimally close
and yet unutterably apart
it is not as if i love you
in the way that lovers do
or desire the entrance of your flesh
in the way that lovers do
i don't even know
that i feel as loss
that the knocking of my inner thoughts
shall never sound upon your inner ears
that the nightmares you have locked away
so diligently in your chest
shall never escape in a gust
down the corridors of your larynx
and leap like a wind
into the open fields of my mind
- in the open weather of my mind
air does not understand water
time has lost its place
what is difficult to say
is what is easy to say
and your storms might
dissolve there
in the open weather of my closed mind -
but you and i
shall never grant each other
the climate of blessing
in which to confess
the climate to confess
the blessing to confess
and without each other as paper
on which to write the ink of our lives
we are images that will not last
night thoughts evaporating with the light
